Waste Matters

Spring 2008 Newsletter

Landfill Tax Increase
by 33% per tonne from 1st April 2008

For those of us in the Waste Industry, this day has been a hot topic for many months. Landfill Tax, as from 1st April 2008, will see a massive 33% increase in just 12 months, the heaviest percentile increase ever seen. This will take tax on Landfill to £32 a tonne.

This significant increase is part of the Government’s initiative in encouraging business to find alternative ways to dispose of their waste. The UK’s generation of waste has been in debate for some while now, and the hope is that by increasing tax, amounts going to Landfill will decrease, having a positive effect on reducing potent green house gases such as methane and CO2.

The initiative does not stop there. April 2009 will see another increase of £8 per tonne and tax is set to increase by heavy percentages year on year. From introduction in October 1996, Landfill Tax has risen from just £7 per tonne to the substantial £32 after this further increase.

Now is a better time than any to invest in recycling and with our full range of recycling schemes including our innovative Food Recycling Round and recent £3 million investment into our Materials Recycling Facility, we can help you gain the financial benefits of segregating and recycling, avoiding the ever rising Landfill Tax. Not forgetting that you will be ‘doing your bit’ for the environment - a winning combination! Contact Customer Services on: 0845 260 2000 for more details

Customer Satisfaction Surveys

At Cawleys, we are fully committed to providing a high quality service to our customers. To find out exactly how well we are performing, and to help us identify any opportunities for improvement, we’ve carried out a Customer Satisfaction Survey every year since 1998.

We’ve also improved in a number of other key areas, including relationship management, resolving problems, being available and accessible, and responding quickly to customer calls.

For our most recent survey, we received the views of 1130 customers during January and February of 2008.

Some of the Key Results are as follows:

Red Bullet 78% of customers would describe their working relationship with us as ‘excellent/good’.

Red Bullet Our Drivers performed well in four key areas – customer relationships, understanding, accessibility and problem solving, with an ‘overall satisfaction’ score of 96%!

79% of our customers have said they would recommend us.

The Business Customer Satisfaction Survey isn’t just a paper exercise. Although we’re very pleased with our overall results this year, we’re constantly on the lookout for ways to help make working with us easier and more convenient. New Twin Chamber Hydraulic Baler Range

Cawleys have recently taken delivery of the newest range of Hydraulic Balers. The CompActive 200 Multi Chamber Baler is safe and easy to use and is ideal for separating waste streams in order to bale and recycle and potentially get some value back from your waste!

This machine is well suited to situations where there are two waste streams with similar volumes. The twin-chamber concept allows one waste product to be baled while the other is being stored. This ensures a tidy working area and better management of waste.

We offer a number of balers and Rotopack machines to suit individual applications. Available on rental or purchase basis baling equipment is simple to operate and can take whole boxes without the need to flatten them saving you time and space. If you would like to speak to one of our recycling specialists about our range of equipment call Ken Golder today on 0845 260 2000

“It is estimated that the UK needs 2,000 additional pieces of waste management infrastructure in order to meet the requirements of the Landfill Directive alone!”!”

Food Recycling Round - Live!

It is official Mother Nature has blossomed. Cawleys innovative Food Recycling Round was officially launched in January!

The closed loop

Our vehicle which is run on Bio-Fuel to support the scheme’s sustainability has been wrapped in a rather beautiful intricate design. The design was chosen to depict the ‘closed loop’ the service offers – food which grows from the earth goes back into a carbon-neutral process producing fertiliser which then goes back into land to grow more food. Hence, Mother Nature. But what is a vehicle without a name?

Cawleys launched a competition in local press to give a name to our lady. Winner Robert Mankelow, from Luton was chosen for his thoughtful interpretation – Chloe which is a clever anagram for Cawleys Helping Life On Earth. So many thanks to Robert for giving our lady a name, which we think is quite perfect! Watch this video to see CHLOE live in action!

If you would like to say good bye to landfill and hello to mother nature with Cawleys, call Kate, Mandy or Fiona today on 0845 260 2000

What a blustery brilliant day!

Despite the sub zero temperatures and gale force winds, which was the weather forecast for Sunday 3rd February this year, the Cawleys’ team with friends, family and customers were out in force to give something back to the environment with our second annual tree
planting day at The Forest of Marston Vale!!

We would like to say a big thank-you to all who joined us. It is great to see so many people with passion and commitment to the environment, so much so they risk battling with the elements and getting covered head to toe with mud and the occasional worm.

”My father and uncles worked at Marston, Elstow and Richmond brick yards back in the 50s, and 60s, and they (the company ) were responsible for at least some of the holes left after extracting clay for brick. So it was satisfying for me to help to regenerate the Forest area, and hence put right some of the previous generation’s (not knowingly at the time) handy work!” Tony Giliberti, Customer.

After the few hours spent planting we managed to plant 2000 trees, a remarkable achievement for all involved on the day. If you missed out joining us tree planting this year then luckily there is always next year as this will be an annual event - see you there!

Did you know...?

“Most of the world’s waste is produced by people from the ‘developed’ world (which includes Britain), even though these people only make up about 5% of the world’s population!””

Spotlight on Hazardous Waste

In this quarter’s newsletter we have decided to put a spot light on the more complicated side of waste and recycling, Hazardous Waste. Cawleys have their own dedicated Hazardous Waste Team and has been operational for 15 years and with nearly 20 years experience between them it’s a pretty dedicated team. Jason Cracknell our Hazardous Waste Manager helps us shed some light on this tricky subject…

Who makes up the Hazardous Team and what are your roles?

Well there’s me, the Team Manager, I have been with Cawleys for 10 years and have 2 degrees; BSc (Hons) Environmental Biology and MSc Environmental Diagnostics. I am also a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor and Health & Safety Manager.

Alan College is our Business Development Manager. He handles all new sales and Depot Operations. Alan has over 10 years
experience in the industry and is also DGSA accredited and CPC Holder.

Our office administrator, Becci Stone, is currently on maternity leave, with her first daughter Mia. Sian Lloyd has stepped in to
hold the fort in her leave!

The transportation side of the team include five skilled drivers sharing three artic tankers, one rigid tanker and artic curtainsider, an 18 tonne curtainsider and one 7.5 tonne curtainsider vehicle.

So what technically is Hazardous Waste?

Hazardous Waste is essentially waste that contains hazardous properties, that may render it harmful to human health or the environment. From 16th July 2005 the European Commission issued a Directive (adopted in the UK by the Hazardous Waste
(England and Wales) Regulations 2005 and the list of wastes (England) Regulations.) on the controlled management of such waste (91/689/EEC) Hazardous waste is defined on the basis of a list, the European Waste catalogue, which is drawn up under that directive.

What are the recent happenings in the world of Hazardous Waste?

Not much has changed in the last two years with regards to hazardous waste disposal, apart from the recent WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Regulations which were applied as of 2nd January 2007. This directive aims to reduce the quantity of waste ending up in Landfill and to encourage re-use, recovery and recycling. WEEE is basically anything with a plug or batteries and therefore producers must ensure it is separated from their general streams. Cawleys are currently collecting approx 5-10 tonnes of WEEE a week for re-processing on one of our box vehicles.

How does the Hazardous Waste Team Operate?

We help our customers define their waste streams; usually a visit from Alan or myself and samples can determine the stream. We then provide a cost effective transport and disposal route, offering the latest environmentally sound treatment techniques. We provide manpower, vehicle, paperwork and labeling and can also respond to environmental disasters.

What streams of waste are surprisingly hazardous?

Steams that perhaps the average Joe may not realize are harmful?

Many people do not actually realise that wastes such as fridges, fluorescent light tubes, CRT monitors are classed as hazardous and need disposing of correctly. What causes more of a problem however, are the nasty garden/agricultural chemicals that some companies have stored. Old chemicals are likely to contain Red List Pesticides, which have since been banned due to their harmful effects and carcinogenic properties.

Meet one of our Customers…

Redcoats Farmhouse Hotel and Restaurant is a country house hotel, between Hitchin and Stevenage, with accommodation shared between the main house, the Stable Courtyard and Milk Parlour. With their AA 3 stars with a rosette for their food (for the 4th year running) the hotel is stunning in more ways than one.

The Farmhouse has been passed down through generations, keeping it within the family. Current owner Peter Butterfield, believed the house was so beautiful it would be wasted not to share with the general public, and converted it to a country house. Although a smaller family owned business, Redcoats is big on ideas and with an environmental understanding Peter approached Cawleys in his quest to
become environmentally sound. We recycle the majority of Redcoats waste providing the office recycling scheme, cardboard and glass collections. In fact there was not much more Redcoats could do in the way of recycling, until they heard about our Food Round, Peter contacted us immediately to implement the scheme.

Goodbye & Good Luck…

Ella Bowler - who was the purchase ledger. Ella is off tackling the jungle in Malaysia. We wish her all the best!

Katy Murphy - who was credit controller. Katy has moved on to pastures new, we wish her all the best in her new position.

Please Welcome...

Karen Blyth - who is the new purchase ledger in Accounts.

And some extra additions…

Becky - our Hazardous Waste Administrator gave birth to baby Mia

Cheryl - our Wastesolve Administrator gave birth to baby Niamh

Joy - our Customer Service Rep gave birth to baby boy Aaron

We wish all our new mums the best with
their bundles!

Did you know...?

“Every year we produce about 3% more waste than the year before. This might not sound much but, if we carry on at this rate, it means that we will double the amount of waste we produce every 25 years!”
